Um, I think things got a little off topic on this. But there is TONS of
free software out there for educational purpose. I don't know exactly what
would apply to K-12 though. But looking through Portage (Gentoo) there is
quite a bit of neat looking stuff:

I'm sure that all of these packages (and probably more) are available for
(U|Edu)buntu. Me personally? I like space. Stellarium and Celestia are a
couple of programs I use that I think would also appeal to children and
maybe spark their intrest in the cosmos:

Again, these are the only programs that I have experience with. I'm sure
that there are more like it for the field of Biology.
