I'm not sure what you are trying to do. Are you trying to ket a kernel 
that matches your processor? Because I'm sure you aren't running a 386. 
That's why I said get the 686 or k7 kernel and you'll notice a big speed 
increase. And if you are trying to get the absolute latest linux kernel 
out, I'm not sure how that works. I just stay up to date with whatever 
one the update manager tells me to get. Is there a reason you want the 
newest kernel? Don't forget http://ubuntuforums.org/
