Just try startx. I forget exactly why, but xf86config didn't work for me 
either. Confused me for several days, and a reinstall. It's way too late 
for me to dig it up tonight, but I'll try tomorrow. There is an 
xf86config equivalent, but I can't remember the name offhand.
