Slackware Install

Others have already given you good advice. You might try to locate some 
files related to X using the "find" command if it is available. For 
example try "find / -name xf86config". "command not found" means only 
what it says, so the "xf86config" command and other required files may 
be there somewhere. I would expect X to be installed by default ( unless 
you did a "custom" install and missed X ) and xf86config to be in some 
PATH set up for you ( root ) by default.

If you can't find the files, I would recommend you do a complete 
reinstall. In my experience with complex UNIX installations ( 7 to 9 
CDs; I know "GNU" but... ), attempting to install a single package can 
force you to jump back and forth between CDs because some package may be 
dependent on another package. Used to drive me crazy.
