So, I hit the "send" button on this answer and two more emails show up in my inbox with the same thing... Either great minds think alike or we should all be scared... I'm not sure which.

Cheers!

Unless you've configured samba to authenticate with PAM (is that even possible?), you will need to run the 'smbpasswd' command for each user to build a samba password file. It is possible to get samba to update the PAM password when the samba password is changed from a Windows box. I don't quite remember the incantation for that. But, suffice it to say that you're going to need an smbpasswd file.

Cheers!

Subject: [nflug] Samba Question

Good morning again, everyone!

Yet another question :)

As I mentioned in a previous posting, I am in the process of setting up a Samba-based fileserver (the first Samba machine I've ever built) to replace our Windows 2000 Server based one.

I am having trouble trying to authenticate with Samba using my username and password that I use to log in with at the console and via ssh. However, I am getting an 'access denied' type message. I am pretty sure my /etc/samba/samba.conf file is set up correctly. This is a Debian Etch based Samba box.

TIA for any help/advice anyone could provide.
