Just to add in my thoughts (yes, I still read the list), I found Wubi:

It allows for a disk-based Ubuntu install without repartitioning.

I used it to install Heron and MAN am I impressed!  It detected my
video card (nVidia), wireless and audio (intel) without a hitch.  It
doesn't like it when I hook up a second monitor (laptop with a video
port) but so far I'm excited.
