On the contrary, I've used Linux cd's to fix windows all the time,
especially when windows can't fix it!
Knoppix has all the ntfs tools, usually you can just run ntfsfix
/dev/part# and it will set the flag to check on boot (scandisk). You can
defrag later from within windows.
You can also use that same knoppix cd to resize the ntfs partition to
make room for Linux.
She may want to keep her existing windows intact.
While your booted with the Knoppix cd and reading the drive, it will
show if your getting any hardware errors with dmesg, like seek errors.
If you see anything like that, it's time to replace the drive..
