[nflug] Ubuntu: Switch users not working and no Virtual Consoles/Terminals

I've been trying to get the switch users app to work in Ubuntu. I asked 
my son to help with this and he noticed that there were no virtual 
consoles. Has anyone experienced this problem? Does any one know how to 
correct this problem? /etc/inittab seems to be correct. If I do a ctrl 
alt F1 all I get is a screen with gray red and black vertical lines.
