[nflug] Microphone in Skype and ALSA

I am using a headset in Skype that I've used before and it has worked, on this
same machine - recently everytime I reboot I have to rerun ALSACONF due to
something getting loaded and blocking it on boot.  I've tried blacklisting and
blocking a bunch of mods but to no avail.  Anyway what is happening is I get
sound running just fine.  I can hear everything fine but when I try to use
Skype or record or anything - I can yell into the mic but only get back a
whisper of sound if the speakers (headset) are turned ALL the way up.  

What things should I check first?  I've tried muting/unmuting the mic, setting
and unsetting capture, I've changed the capture channel from on to off and
back. Not really sure what I shoudl be aiming for!

Should my Mic be pluggedinto mic on the SB Live or Line in - which one assumes
a powered mic?  Is it mic that assumes a powered source or is it line in?
