[nflug] ubuntu xserver

Try sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start to start the xserver (or /etc/init.d/kdm
start if you installed kde).  If this starts it, then run System -->
Administration --> Services  (or run services-admin from a command prompt in
X) and make sure there is a checkbox next to gdm (or kdm).
