smartmontools
smartctl -a /dev/hda will give you general info on the drive, including
overall health assesment. smartctl -t short or -t long /dev/hda will
give you the short or long test of the drive...  wait the time it tells
you though to see the status in the smartctl -a output.  Short test
takes about a minute,  long one takes 80 minutes (but may take longer) 
you can run smartctl -a durign the self test to see the status..

i.e. for me I get:
Self-test execution status:      ( 249) Self-test routine in
progress...
                                        90% of test remaining.

I recommend doing this with minimal other stuff running.  (i.e. use
"telinit single" to switch into single user mode (Assuming
redhat/mandrake/debian system),  on gentoo you'd use "rc single"
