Just to check things out, I put ff back the way it was and launched it
from xterm. It seems to have non-fatal problems anyway.
bigbird ~/installs/firefox: $firefox
which: no gwget in
(/usr/local/qt-3.3.2/bin:/usr/local/qt-3.3.2/bin:/usr//bin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/home/bigbird/bin)

/bin/sh: line 1: /usr/bin/esd: No such file or directory
Cutting log (size: 101596, max: 100000)bigbird ~/installs/firefox: $
What log is it cutting? All I see is ~/inst6alls/firefox/installs.log
which just shows when I updated extensions.
