Off Topice Wirless networking

Hi All

  I know is is off-topic but I have a  wirless problem.

  I just got a d-link wirlewss router and card for laptop.
  I managed to get them  see each other, their both showing that they
seem to be talking to each other. 
   I am on a dial-up and using my xp drsktop as the gateway tothe
router, 
 Some said something about setting a stic ip address for the router for
the card to find , I 'm not sure  if that what I need to or what. 

Anyone have any ides how to make this work?
