Using Grub? At the Grub screen edit line that you're normaly boot up in
(when it's highlighted, press <e>). Look for the line that says...
kernel=
highlight that and press <e>. At the end of the line, add a <space> and
the number 1. Save the changes and hit <b>. You'll now be in single
user mode. From there, you can edit your inittab file (should be in
/etc). Change run level to 3, and reboot. This will put you in
non-graphical mode. You'll be able to investigate further from there.
If you want to test X, just type startx at the command line. Once you
have it working again, you can change your run level back to 5 (graphical).
