It's definitely an image of some kind.
That's the kind of output you get if you view a jpg file in a text editor.
Before email attachments, binary images on usenet looked like that 
before you "reassembled" the data.
I never had an Apple, but for a while I had a "BSOD" screensaver for Win95.
I also saw that on the screen when there was a thumbprint on a live CD 
that was trying to load.
It locked up just like you, and I had to restart with the system rest 
button.
