Tim,
I have a compaq 2596 w/Suse 8.2 on it and was wondering:
1.) Have you tried the Linuxant "driver/wrappers" for your wireless?  I 
used them with Mandrake and they worked GREAT but with Suse 8.2 I'm 
having a lot of problems.
2.) Did you use Suse 8.2 prior to using 9.1?
