konsole display

When I'm using konsole (kde Xterm) and I type long commands, they wrap 
back on the same line on the display making it very hard to read.  Is 
there a way to fix this.  It also happens when I use history to look at 
previous commands, so just typing a \  at the end of a new command line 
to go to the next line won't fix it.
