Inline with what Kevin said, you don't _need_ to connect to a POTS
line..
(you do need some VOIP phone or ATA converter so that a telephone can
"talk" to the asterisk box)
I just recently converted my whole house to VOIP. In fact I'm getting
rid of my verizon phone line..all my calls are going out using a VOIP
provider (much better than going out through a local POTS line)..

You actually don't need hardware. If you want to
connect to the POTS line you will need an X100p FXO
card ( digitnetworks.com has them for under $20 now).
This may be a good topic for the next meeting (or we
could meet seperately). I have 2
Bugettone phones now. so we can play with them. You
can run aterisk as an IP only phone and use kphone or
sjphone w/ a headset w/mic. you won't need hardware
for that. For great info on asterisk go to
voip-info.org . It has all the info you need to get
started. If you want more links, lemme know.
Asterisk is Ast-kickin' Telephony!!!
