To start, I'd suggest getting one of the distro's that
run from cdrom ( no install needed). That way you can
take a look a few w/out committing to installing
before you know which suits your likes/needs. To name
a few, Mandrake One (rpm based), Mepis, Knoppix
(Debian based) and Slackware has one also. There are
many more. I'm sure there's a Redhat based one also.
And SuSe offers one. If you have any problems or need
help just ask and someone will offer help/guidance.
