By default, I set all my systems up with Alsa for sound now. I started
doing it for cards that were having problems, usually with the esd sound
daemon of Gnome not letting go of the sound card when a user would log
out, then the next user would have no sound. Now I set up Alsa everytime
and haven't had a problem since. You might want to give that a try. I
usually just make a dir /usr/src/alsa and compile from there, then make
a copy of my /etc/modules.conf file, then make the necessary changes for
the Alsa stuff, all of which can be found for just about any sound card
at http://www.alsa-project.org . I do it this way because if it for some
reason doesn't work or makes no difference, I can always just copy back
the copied /etc/modules.conf file and all would be as it was before.
Alsa has not let me down yet. That may be all you need for the added
functionality your looking for.
