Xserver restarts (NVIDIA issues)

As has already been posted, Peter and I have had problems with Athlon
processors and NVIDIA GeForce boards. The problem is that for some reason the
Xserver was not being reset between logins, causing problems with anything that
used the XVideo extension. Peter runs various RedHat distributions and I use
Mandrake 9.0 ('cuz I haven't gotten around to upgrading to 9.1 :-).

Someone posted about the GDM config that forces a server restart before posting
a login. I had looked for the equivalent for KDM but was unable to find it in
the documentation or in any of the configuration tools.

I tried running 'strings' on /usr/bin/kdm and got nowhere so I poked around in
everything that had 'kdm' as part of it's name. I finally found
'TerminateServer' in /usr/bin/kdm-config (which is an executable that you can't
run outside of kdm) and went into /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc to add it. The
appropriate section looks like:
[X-:0-Core]
Authorize=true
AutoLogin1st=true
AutoLoginEnable=false
Reset=/etc/X11/xdm/TakeConsole
Setup=/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0
Startup=/etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole
TerminateServer=true

I logged out and restarted my X-server with Alt-Ctrl-Backspace. Now when I log
out, I get the full server reset and an NVIDIA logo pops up for a second, just
like when it first starts.

I don't know if Mandrake 9.1 provides access to this configuration variable
from any of the tools. Maybe I'll send them a note...

Cheers!

Bob
