open office

The first open of OpenOffice is painful. No matter how you slice it, there
is a lot that gets loaded. Once OO is open, opening new documents is
typically pretty quick. Leaving one of the windows open is a good thing
to do if you're in and out of stuff a lot. Start up delays are one of the
main reasons that M$ office used to install the 'Quick Launcher' for Office.
It loaded the main libraries and shared operating code so that later
invokations of any of the Office apps would pop right up.

There's just a huge amount of code there.

Cheers!
