I'll check that out.  My first Linux box was a 386/SX w/ 4 meg of ram on 
a 40 meg HD.  That was pretty minimal.  Had to download the IDE-CD-ROM 
drivers at 2400 baud!  I use Slackware because using the "expert" mode 
makes it easy to skip the stuff I don't want/need.  But, even so, once 
you add Xwindows, it just balloons!

What the kids want is enough of the "graphics goodies" and space for 
StarOffice.  Plus, "Daddy!  I >NEED< my Instant Messenger!"  **SIGH!**  
(What they really want is Win98, but  I don't want to be a "pirate" or 
encourage a repressive monopoly!

I've read that"Jabber" is supposed to do that, plus provide truly local 
IM set up for LAN's, too.  Anybody try that?  That'd make an interesting 
topic, too.
