sound woes :-(

hi all, 

          I'm having a bit of a sound config problem.
Seems that I can play wave files fine, but when I try 
to play mp3's the system really struggles (sounds like
slow motion). I'm running mandrake 7.2  , and have a
CyrixII 300mhz processor and on board chip SIS. Any
tips or tricks to make this thing play would be
greatly appreciated.
