I wouldn't believe what the blackberry is telling you about the 
charging, it is probably trying to talk to it's software at that point. 
I have clients that use their blackberrys with vmware under Linux and 
they charge just fine, where Linux is actually controlling the USB and 
windows is just emulating it. Works fine under vmware. I've never 
bothered trying to get it working under Linux because all the apps it 
integrates with are windows apps anyway. The software the blackberry 
runs on needs to change in order for it to be useful in Linux.
