the easiest and most efficient method to do this would be to setup a NIS
or LDAP services for your users/groups and use autofs to share /home to
all of your systems. if you have a machine that you can use as a
NIS/LDAP and NFS server it should be pretty simple. i would use LDAP
over NIS personally but the choice is yours.

the only problem is replicating your passwd/shadow/group files is what
to do if you have a mix of different distros on you network. the
contents of said files are not likely to be the same between debian,
SuSE, fedora, etc. if you have all debian systems then use ssh/scp to
copy those files. use ssh-keygen to ssh keys on one machine as root,
them copy the id_rsa.pub from that machine to authorized_key2 on the
remote machine. you'll then be able to login with being prompted for a
password/phrase and you can use scp to do the copy.
