["Major League Bummer"]

I know what you mean about the POS BIOS that some Toshi laptops use. My
Satellite M35 has the same --or a similar-- and others in the Linux
community have griped about it. I like my Toshiba in most other
respects just fine, but this CMOS is %$#&*.

I don't have time right now to do any real research. Got things to do as
the wife is going in for surgery tomorrow AM.

Since my Toshi has NVIDIA graphics, I can't run any experiments
parallel to yours, but one possible thing for you to try comes to my mind.

You're probably way ahead of me, considering how long you've been
wrestling with this. But:
re:
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Kernel_Parameters_for_ACPI/APIC

What if you were to use the boot argument:
---------------------
acpi_irq_pci=irq_number
-----------------------
and make certain it was using an irq that was not being used by the
sound or any other vital device?

Sorry if I'm a day late / dollar short with that suggestion. You
probably already tried it.

Your work-around with the 2 boot options in GRUB would be fine for me to
deal with on my own machine. I almost never run the battery alone
anyway. But, I know, when you're working on somebody else's baby, it
hurts the pride in one's workmanship to have to deliver a job with a
built-in band-aid solution.

Good luck. We'll get to the champagne on this one yet. . .
