Most devices drivers are loaded as modules at boot
time. Thus, if the kernel sees a new device and has
the drivers, it loads them automatically.  If not, you
have to look at the config and see if 
it can be enabled. If not you have to search to see if
someone has made the module and then install it.
That's why when the kernel loads the nvidia module
it's usually nv and not nvidia which is a proprietary
driver that gives you the glx capabilities. Well, you
get the idea.
