Smbmount / Tar --> possible option

It's alot of data, when all is said and done it's going to be like 70GB. 
I could sftp it to a linuxbox, then write it to tape from there, but 
then I need a staging area big enough on the backup server. I need to 
put it to tape becuase I need some history. From what I read the 
smbmount/tar timestamp issue is a known one, it's not critical but a 
little quirky, I'm not worried too much about it at this point. Thanks
