Nah, I think that's getting a little crazy. The only time I've ever done 
that was on a tired old machine with 128mb of ram, and a 600mhz cpu. I 
don't think gnome and especially a terminal window are terrible memory 
hogs. The guys might have more to say about this though. Anyone? -Jesse
