Still clueless about multimedia

Mozilla gave me a glassy-eyed stare, so I saved target to disk (some 
kind of tiny file that just points to the real thing) and tried clicking 
on it in the file manager.  He sic'ed  xine on it which delivered 
another glassy-eyed stare and mumbled something about not having an 
appropriate plug-in to demultiplex it.  Not to be easily dissuaded, I 
parried forth in turn with xmms, kaboodle, and noatun.  I think audio on 
Linux is a fraud!  (before you get too excited, see the random quote 
that got inserted when I composed this message ;)   )

When this happens, I just feel "stupid".

Help would be appreciated!
