xawtv

I figured that since you had a USB device, that it would require different
drivers from the standard PCI Tuner card. This is still partially my
belief without looking into your problem :)

BT848 is an older type of tuner chip used on tuner cards. The most
commonly used right now is BT878 (used by Hauppaugge company). You can obtain BT*
drivers from www.bytesex.org/bttv. You can also obtain the latest version
of xawtv from www.bytesex.org/xawtv. Both progs are writeen by the same
guy *hint hint*.

Check out the readme in the bttv tar file. It discusses the various
chipsets, how to configure the driver, modules.conf, what to do to the
kernel, etc. btw, the bttv tar file will generate the tuner.o, bttv.o
modules that you're looking for.
