I've been running X86_64 Linux (previously Fedora, now openSUSE 10.3) on
a dual-core Athlon 64 for about 2 years.

On this system I run 32-bit Firefox, because there are no 64-bit
versions of plugins like Flash and Adobe Acrobat. (I have both 32- and
64-bit versions of Sun Java installed, so it can be used as a Firefox
plugin). (I've read of a project to allow use of 32-bit plugins with
64-bit Firefox, but I haven't kept up with its status.)

Other than that I run 64-bit versions of basically everything.

One caveat: From what I've read X86_64 Ubuntu is not configured to
support 32-bit programs, so you would need a different distribution to
suit your purposes.
