I tried following some exim suggestions to get it to stop trying to search dns for everything , added to hosts, etc but still no go - How can I get mail to the world to still use smarthost but keep local mail local?

Also my experiences have shown that the first entry in /etc/hosts will
be used as the sending domain for the box, if you didn't set a
masquerade, at least in sendmail. I setup boxes all the time to send
cron stuff so I can monitor.
