DO NOT MOVE /lib off of / if you want to be able to boot. :)

LVM and the needed tools need to be in the initrd (tricky to get
right).  the LVM howto (on any linux doc project mirror) tells you how
to do it,  though modern distros like ubuntu (with the alternate boot
cd ONLY) can install a system to BOOT off of an LVM volume (/ on LVM) 
so can gentoo as I run / on LVM here at home (gentoo)

If you like a linux "that just plain works" with minimal fenagling,
install ubuntu (if you want LVM you need to use the ALTERNATE install
CD, not the regular desktop one)

If you want the ultimate in control (and effort) try gentoo.  It has a
steep learning curve, is the ultimate in flexibility and speed
(mostly),  but much more effort intensive to initially get setup.
