Actually, you can log into both the GUI and CLI in Ubuntu based distro's. 
Check your /etc/inittab file, for the respawn command.  Most distro's have
it set for a terminal to respawn agetty or mgetty, whereas Ubuntu, if I am
correct, respawn's GDM or another gui manager.
