[nflug] Thinkpad T42 laptop repair

Hi Lindsay,

Here are a couple of comments.

The plug end for the AC Adapter within the laptop is replaceable. My
brother has sourced this component on ebay and used it to effect a
repair on a laptop. Some care must be taken while soldering. Radio Shack
has a cold heat soldering tool which is probably what he used. Also you
might be able to locate someone trained in soldering.

I have an RC Transmitter that would not charge through its corresponding
jack. When I disassembled the unit, expecting to find a loose connector,
I noticed that there was a small circuit on an isolated printed circuit
board that must be related to diverting the charge from an AC feed to
the enclosed battery. These components were not servicable. It would be
a good idea to disassemble your laptop and check for the suspected loose
connection prior to assuming that it is just the plug end.

With the battery removed you could check for continuity from the plug
exterior to the points where it is attached to the PCB.

Some business customers have had their laptop serviced at CS Business
Systems here in Buffalo. Not sure about their rates, but the work was
completed to satisfaction.

The on-campus computer store at UB has a repair department (UB Micro).

My brother might be able to take a look at your laptop. He has worked
upon at least a half dozen for various repairs. Email me at
yurko at bflo.com for contact info.

Subject: [nflug] Thinkpad T42 laptop repair

Hey all, this is my first post here.

I'm looking for a place in the area that can repair a Thinkpad T42 that
isn't getting power. 3 AC adapters have been tried to no avail.
The AC/charging indicator just doesn't light up and the battery
continues to drain. It has around a 20% charge left at this point and
will boot up fine.

This is not exactly linux related question but I figured that local lug
members would be better in the know about where to get this fixed, since
most repair shops don't have the expertise to get to the bottom of this.
I'm doing this for a UB student so I'm trying to keep costs down,
otherwise I'd just say just ship it to IBM.

Hopefully it is something simple, like a loose solder joint at the power
connector. If anyone has diagnostic suggestions I'd also like to hear
them. I don't live in the area but I could try and step my friend
through them over the phone. What I'd really like to do is probe for
continuity at the power connection but unfortunately I am like 400 miles
away.
