[nflug] Getting DSL to work, etc.

Just got my Verizon DSL line activated.
I went into Windoze 98se and got everything to work (with only one
support call!) The modem manual rocks! It does everything except teach
me networking! There are a ton of options I don't understand, but I
probably won't need any of them.
However, on the Linux side:
Mandrake Linux 9.1 RC2 dual boot with Windoze 98se
PII 266MHz 128MB ram, 30GB hda and 120GB hdb
Removed my second ethernet card and my WinTV card (neither was in use).
Just cleaning things up.
When I boot, in the Mandrake window that scrolls by, I get something
about insmod errors, but it goes by too fast to read. It may have
something to do with stuff I was trying to do to get the TV card to work
a very long time ago. dmesg shows that TV stuff is still getting loaded
that I should no longer need.
Long ago I remember reconfiguring and recompiling my kernel for TV
support, but I'm almost sure I never installed a new kernel. Just had
to go through the motions so Linux could find some settings, etc. for it.
I also get a few USB errors (when I look at dmesg), but they're probably
not important. All that's plugged in to the USB 1.1 hub are my scanner
(only works in Win 98se) and my webcam (which works under win 98 se and
has never worked under Linux). Occasionally, I plug in flash drives
that work fine in both OS's , but none are plugged in now.
Plugged in DSL filters to all the phones (including the computer's modem
line).
Attached the DSL (Westell 327W Wireless modem/router) to the line and to
my ethernet port.
When it first comes on E1 - E4 led's (for ethernet port activity) light
(to prove they work).
After a very short time, the DSL light on the modem flashes and then
goes solid. Same for the Internet light, so the modem and line are
working fine.
The main problem I'm having is that the E1 light on the modem is not
lighting up and I can't access the modem at 192.168.1.1 from my browser.
I tried plugging into E2 and that doesn't light either. I even tried a
new ethernet cable.
This leads me to believe that the ethernet connection to the modem is
nonfunctional.
Since it' works in Windoze (and Linux seems to be at least somewhat
happy - see dmesg snip below), I think something in Linux is not
properly activating the ethernet port hardware.
I have not done any firewall, iptables, etc. stuff on this box. I don't
even know how to.
1) How do I debug the ethernet connection to the modem?
2) Once I get the ethernet connection working, what else do I have to do
in Linux to access the Internet and email? I have the modem manual
(pdf) and have it all set up for normal usage (from the windoze side).
I just set up a modem-only DSL connection (in Windoze) for my partner at
another location, so I know my way around the modem a bit. The modem
portion of this modem/router looks identical from what I can see in the
manual.
3) Where do I look to fix the insmod problem?
4) My connection speed is roughly 800k/168k (to save money). Can I
assume that my 10baseT ethernet card is more than fast enough to support
maximum throughput? At what speed connection would this nic be too slow?
Thanks.
Joe
P.S. I'm sending this using dialup because I do everything possible on
Linux (and because I don't want to reboot).
