just run "startx" to start an X11 session.

if you wonder why the console blanks out in text mode (you didn't state
you were in text mode before),  that's the kernel shutting off the
screen to avoid monitor burn.  It can also be caused by APM or ACPI
managing the power consumption of the box. (check for apmd, or acpid)

To control console blanking read the man page on "setterm"
