Personally, we have a couple digital cameras that take SD cards. Pop the
card out, transfer the files to my HDD, pop the card back into the camera

You can get a multi-card reader with a usb connection for under $10 if
you look around. Some computers --especially newer laptops-- have SD
card readers built in. All the Linux distros I've tried recognize an SD
card-reader as a USB thumb drive and usually automount it as sdb [I have
a SATA HDD that is sda].

My wife bought a Vivitar Vivicam 3635 a couple years ago for $100 at the
local WalMart. only 2.1 MegaPixels, but with a 3X optical zoom and 2X
digital zoom, it takes a nice, clear 1600x1200 jpg. Autofocus,
autoflash, and the 2 AA cell batteries last a long time with moderate
flash use. Whenever I get my act together, I'll post the link to a
webpage I'm working on with some pix from a Chris Isaak concert up in
Niagara Falls, Ont. Despite the extremes of lighting with stage
spotlights, that little workhorse took some darn nice jpgs.

Here's a good online dealer for various computer parts & electronics.
What they have in stock at any time varies. They're running a post-Xmas
sale. Judge for yourself --online reviews, whatever-- if any of what
they have suits you.
