Indeed. Thanks for the tip. Nothing in the first two, but I found this 
in Xorg.0.log:

Definitely looks ugly.

I follwed the advice there like so:

root at yasuo[/home/qfwfq]# mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype
root at yasuo[/home/qfwfq]# mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype/openoffice
root at yasuo[/home/qfwfq]# mkfontdir 
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-bitstream-vera

but I still have squares instead of letters.

I was going to poke around in synaptic for fonts, but I now see that it 
is entirely little squares. Is there a particular font package that I 
can just apt-get?
