[nflug] Vanilla Kernels

When did choosing a vanilla kernel become so complicated? By this, I
refer to obtaining the latest kernel source from ftp.kernel.org.
I remember back in the day, one would traverse to the desired kernel
directory (/.../blah/.../v2.x), and obtain the latest kernel. The
highest minor rev. number implied the newest kernel. But this no
longer appears to be the case. This sweet simplicity is gone.
I went into the v2.6 kernel directory to retrieve the latest kernel
source, which I was assuming to be 2.6.19. But instead, this is what
I find (based on timestamps)
2.6.15.7 - posted on 3/28/2006
2.6.16.34 - posted on 11/29/2006
2.6.17.14 - posted on 10/13/2006
2.6.18.5 - posted on 12/02/2006 - (2.6.18.4 was posted on 11/29)
2.6.19 - posted on 11/29/2006
I haven't been avidly reading my /. lately, but when exactly did they
start maintaining the minor rev numbers concurrently? I'm not seeking
an answer so much as venting, since I found this to be annoying.
Plus, where's the love for 2.6.17? How did it get screwed out of a 2+
month patch update? RIP 2.6.17.15 :(
