Highly unlikely. Unless you were using a truly ancient kernel version before, IPv6 support has been around for quite a while - in the 2.4 series, for example.

Implement / change any firewall rules, or use any kind of administration utility? I've seen things such as Webmin create such long, convoluted firewall rules that the system couldn't process them quickly enough. 

You also may want to verify that the physical layer hasn't coincidentally shit itself at the same time. Verify that you're not seeing errors on the network card, that you see the same thing plugged into a different port on the switch, etc.
