File sharing question

I just installed a peer to peer file sharing program, and I have a 
question.
What the heck is a hashlink, and what do you do with one ?
dictionary.com did not have a definition , and google gave all kinds of 
results with technical specs on algorithms for creating hash.
Just put it in laymen's terms with respect to P2P.
