For top-like instant status, iptraf is pretty good. For historical
graphing, use mrtg. I can send you my mrtg configuration for
monitoring ethernet devices if you'd like me to.
Or, there's always watch 'ifconfig |grep eth0 -A7 |head -n7|grep "RX bytes"'
