kppp hardware modem

Ok
 I got the modem dialing out. I had to
chmod +s /usr/sbin/kppd #make
chmod +s /usr/sbin/pppd #make 
Now when its connected it says is connection speed
9600baud. Kppp gui is set for the highest baud 460800.
How do I get it to be faster? Where are the config
files for kppp so I can just edit them manually? Any
tricks? Thanks!
