Its not really, so long as you have opengl working. Just like Frank, I only use it for showing off. But for day-to-day use I don't keep it on. Its been a while (and I'm away from my home computer) but if I remember correctly it used somewhere around 5-7% CPU on my P3. Even that is more than I'm willing to expend for every day use. That's why I got away from Windows. But such is the price of neatness.
