Linux is far from a "User Friendly" desktop (Despite marketing attempts). I'd be surprised if your cd burner didn't actually work with Linux. But its a system of trade-offs. Example: My D3D suddenly stopped working in Windows (years ago) when I switched cards. Some searching revealed that it was a known flaw and the only thing to do was to reinstall windows (if you wanted any d3d in games). At the same time, in Linux, it was simpler. It took some work, but it was doable. Not-to-mention no longer having to reinstall my OS every 6 months. Also, now that I think of it, my mom's cd burner doesn't work either. I've tried just about everything but I think I will end up reinstalling windows. If you just install the latest Fedora it'll probably be fine. Most all linux distros will work fine out of the box. Problems can occur when you upgrade things (as with windows). But if you aren't willing to put a bit of effort in, it won't work out. Its still a programmers desktop. Eventually we'll muster enough support to get drivers to come with our brand-spanking-new hardware.

I guess my point is: If something goes critically wrong (eg. cdrecord doesn't play well with 2.6) you *can* actually fix it instead of scrapping the whole install thanks to free software.
