Ron, you have plenty of video. My thin clients only
have 2mb and can pull a 
gui. My suggestion would be to use Ubuntu. It still
uses the old debian installer. Ubuntu seems to support
a lot of video and other older harware pretty well.
But I would suggest that you try a light weight window
manager. XFCE4 is a good middle ground between heavier
gnome/kde and ultra
light fluxbox/icewm. Somewhere between desktop manager
and window manager. If your having problems getting a
gui, it might be the monitor. I would look at LTSP's
web site and look for the mode and refresh rates for
old monitors. I think it's in the contib area. When
installing use a 17 inch monitor and it if you have
problems then it isn't the monitor. In which case look
and your /var/log/Xorg log and it should tell you
where it's failing. X windows can be difficult even
for old crusty unix admins. X is both a blessing and a
curse.
