It's been a while since I've rolled a kernel for myself, so I'm not sure where the option would be for different versions of V4L. I should be able to poke around tonight for that. 

Do you have a System.map file anywhere that you can look at? It should list the symbols in the kernel, if you don't see any that match v4l2 then I'd say it's likely you don't have it compiled in..
